Here are some of the most frequently asked questions we get. If your question is not answered here, please feel free to Email Sacha.
Q: What is VAVi?
A: VAVi is a sport and social club that sets up sports leagues for adults in the San Diego area. In addition to sports, we also offer post game happy hours for each sport and a large new years eve party, weekend vacations (Mexico, Vegas, ski trips) and volunteer opportunities (Cancer Relay for Life, etc.).
Q: What are the different ways to sign up and how do they work?
A: For all signups, you may signup online, by mail, or by phone. When signing up online, click the “signup online” button, and choose from the following three options:
Free Agent-- Signing up as a free agent means that you have signed up individually and VAVi will do our best to place you on a team with other free agents and/or small groups.
Small Group--Small group registration is designed for TWO or MORE friends that would like to be placed on the same team together. You can also sign up full teams this way if you don’t want to pay for a whole team on one credit card. Each member of a small group will register and pay for themselves individually. If a small group reaches twelve members, it is considered its own TEAM and VAVi WILL NOT add others to the roster (there IS NOT a maximum number of players once your small group has reached twelve and it has become its own team). IF a small group is anywhere between 2-11 members, VAVi will combine other small groups and free agents to make a team totaling 7 males and 7 females. DEADLINE INFO: 10 days before the league begins is when VAVi will start combining small groups and free agents to form teams as necessary. Please have all small group members registered by this time as there is no guarantee of them being placed on your team if they attempt to register after.
REGISTRATION PROCESS: Here is the PROCESS every member of a small group needs to follow to sign up online. PLEASE READ CAREFULLY:
1. Go to the league that you would like to register for and click signup online.
2. Click on small group member.
**The first person to sign up in the group will choose the option to create a small group. Give your small group a name that others will identify with (this may be a team name, or simply your own name, e.g. “Tommy Lane’s Small Group” or “Homerun Kings”).
**If your small group has already been created, and you are a joining member, you will be asked to choose which small group you want to join when signing up.
3. Each person in the small group only pays for themselves (including the person that creates the small group).
Team--A team captain or organizer may sign up an entire team. There are 3 options to choose from when signing up your team:
1. To sign up online, simply click the grey "Signup Online" button under the specific league for which you are would like to register. Select team registration and click "I Agree" and Continue. Fill out the form and click Continue. NOTE: If some of your team roster information is not quite ready, please do not let this deter you from signing up. You can sign up and pay, forgo your team roster information, and then you may log back into our system under the member login link with your username and password to make changes to your team roster, team name, and t-shirt sizes. Team captains may make roster changes up until 48 hours before the league begins.
2. To sign up by Mail or Fax, simply click HERE. Print and fill out thie form and either mail it to 4501 Mission Bay Dr, Suite 3F SD, CA 92109 or fax it to 858-777-5727.
3. To sign up by phone: Call us at 858-273-3485 and you can pay with your credit card.
If you have any further questions, please call 858-273-3485 or Email Sacha.
Q: How do I pay for the leagues?
A: You are welcome to pay in any of the following ways:
Q: What happens after I sign up? How will I know what to do?
A: You will receive an email about 7 days before the start of the league. The email will either be a ‘league welcome’ email with details such as team rosters, schedules, directions, etc. Or it will be an update email informing the players registered for that league that the above information is being finalized and will be published as soon as possible. If you have any questions in the meantime, you can call (858) 273-3485 or Email Sacha.
Q: If I sign up as a free agent or small group am I guaranteed to get on a team?
A: No. But we will do our very best and if we can't, we will issue you a full refund. Due to the large number of males that sign up, free agent females and small groups with females in them have a better chance of getting placed on a team.
Q: How can I view my small group roster?
A: We have just added a new function to our website that allows the creator of a small group (aka Small Group captain) to be able to log-in with his/her username and password to view who has signed up under his/her small group. (NOTE: Small Group captains can only log in and see the players registered on their teams (rosters), while Team captains can log in and actually change their roster information.)
Q: Why are the prices higher than they used to be to play the same sports?
A: The City of San Diego has increased the fees for field rental. We have subsequently raised our fees to counteract our increased costs. Here is an article from the Union-Tribune which talks about the new fees. As of July 1st, the City Council has voted to pass all fee increases pertaining to adult sports leagues. (Click Here to read the article by the Union Tribune.)
Q: How do the prices work? Do you pay a membership?
A: Membership is free, and everyone is welcome to enjoy our happy hour specials and volunteer events. In order to join a sports league, you must pay only the fees for that specific sport. Prices vary for each sport, and VAVi’s special events such as vacations also have varying prices.
Q: Can I sign up a whole team at once?
A: For all team sports, you can pay a one time fee online except for Dodgeball, Lacrosse and Kickball. To sign up a whole team for those sports you will just get everyone on your team to sign up under the "Small Group" process (see above for how this is done). Also for those sports you can call up the office at 858-273-3485 and pay with a credit card the small group price for every person on your team (after you will need to fax the pay by mail form in with your roster).
Q: What is the age range?
A: The majority of people are ages 21 to 40. However, we welcome anyone who is willing and able to play and is at least 20 years of age. (No one under 20 may play because of insurance reasons!)
Q: What about an "old-timer" like me? Can I join?
A: Of course! As long as you are willing to play, then you are totally welcome to join. If you feel that you are not comfortable in terms of age, Adventures in San Diego is a club for slightly older individuals.
Q: What sports do you have?
A: We offer the following VAVi Sports: Basketball, Lacrosse, Flag Football, Tennis (Beginner/ Social), Soccer (Outdoor), Softball, Golf (Beginner / Social), Volleyball (Indoor/ Outdoor & Beginner/ Social), Surfing, Kickball, and Dodgeball. We also offer the following VAVi Fitness Classes: Running, Kickboxing, Body Toning, and Beach Bar Boot Camp. And we offer the following VAVi Dance Classes: World Dance Workout, Ballroom: Dance Like the Stars, and Salsa Lessons.
Because our Sports/Fitness/Dance Class Offerings are always changing, you may check the following link for the most up-to-date list: Sports Offered!
Q: Are they all COED?
A: Besides all-male basketball and all-male lacrosse, everything is COED.
Q: Where are the sports located?
A: VAVi runs the leagues all over San Diego, and again, for each sport it varies. Check out your desired sports’ webpage for more specific information. Directions are also on our website.
Q: How do we get our t-shirts?
A: Your team shirts will be delivered by a VAVi representative at the first game of the league.
Q: Is this a "singles" club?
A: No. You can sign up by yourself, with a buddy/wife/husband/etc. or with your very own team. However, it is a great way to meet new people, and many relationships have been formed on VAVi fields.
Q: What if I don’t play sports?
A: As for sports, you can pass on the word to someone you know who does and then root them on at their games!! We also offer trips, happy hours and volunteer prospects for those individuals who don’t play sports. Who out there doesn’t enjoy a happy hour special?
A: Team captains should make sure that they have enough players to field a team each week, as well as keep EVERYONE organized. Should there be any questions or concerns over the course of the league, it is the team captain's responsibility to contact VAVi. Also, it is a good idea to have a “roll call” before games to make sure that you are equipped with enough players for each game (email is great for this).
Q: Can you set up practice fields for us?
A: No. We do not set up practices; however, you are more than welcome (and encouraged!) to set something up for your team on your own.
Q: What are the time commitments?
A: You will play one-hour games once a week. For example, if you sign up for Wednesday night Kickball, you will play a game every Wednesday night at 6, 7, 8, or 9 PM. Each week the times for your game vary, but the night of the week that you play will stay the same. A league lasts between 8-10 weeks, and that does not include the play-offs.
